$25,000 to Port Coquitlam for Environmental Planning
PORT COQUITLAM – City of Burnaby Mayor
Derek Corrigan, representing the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities’ (FCM) National Board of Directors, and James Moore,
MP (Port Moody−Westwood−Port Coquitlam),
representing the Honourable Gary
Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, announced today a
$25,000 Green Municipal Fund grant to help the City of Port
Coquitlam complete the first three milestones of the Partners for
Climate Protection (PCP) program.
“The Green Municipal Fund supports projects that maximize
environmental, social and economic progress at the local level,”
said Mayor Corrigan. “The
local action plan for municipal operations and the
community-at-large will address a wide variety of issues such as
land use planning, procurement, building retrofits, decisions
regarding solid waste management, and water conservation.”
“Through the Green Municipal Fund, Canada’s New Government is
demonstrating its commitment to clean air, clean water, clean land,
and clean energy. This government is also showing its dedication
to combining community support with stronger accountability and
transparency practices,” said James Moore,
MP. “Investments based on the
Fund’s feasibility studies, field tests and pilot projects allow
project partners to be confident that taxpayers’ dollars are being
spent efficiently and effectively."
The Government of Canada has endowed the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities with $550 million to establish and manage the Green
Municipal Fund. The Fund supports municipal government action to cut
pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve Canadians’
quality of life.
“With the help of the Green Municipal Fund, we will be able to
create a corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions inventory
and forecast, set an emissions reduction plan, and develop a local
action plan.,” said
Mayor Scott W. Young, City of Port Coquitlam.
“We estimate corporate greenhouse gas reductions of 1,000
tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) and community
greenhouse gas reductions of 17,400 tonnes of CO2e can be realized.”
The City of Port Coquitlam has been a member of PCP since 2001. PCP
is a network of 137 Canadian municipal governments who have
committed to reduce greenhouse gases and act on climate change. It
is the Canadian component of the Cities for Climate Protection
network of more than 600 communities worldwide. Internationally,
the network is managed by the International Council for Local
Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). In Canada, PCP is delivered in
partnership with FCM.
FCM has been the national voice of municipal governments since 1901.
It is dedicated to improving the quality of life in communities by
promoting strong, effective and accountable municipal government.
