Major Infrastructure Investments for Tri-Cities
PORT COQUITLAM – Canada's
Conservative Government has announced that it is delivering on its
promise to invest $591 million in the Asia-Pacific Gateway and
Corridors Initiative. "These investments will help grow North
America - Asia trade through British Columbia, and in the process
bring jobs and unprecedented investments to B.C. and all of western
Canada," says MP James Moore, Parliamentary Secretary for the
Pacific Gateway.
A
number of important strategic infrastructure projects are receiving
money immediately, including the new Pitt River Bridge and the Mary
Hill interchange which will receive $90 million from the federal
government.
The new Pitt River Bridge and the Mary
Hill interchange will improve the efficient flow of trade by
replacing a pair of swing bridges which are already unable to handle
current traffic volumes during peak periods. The Pitt River crossing
connects key economic and transportation facilities, such as the
Canadian Pacific Railway intermodal yard, with Greater Vancouver.
This investment will reduce travel times and increase reliability
across the Pitt River. It will also enhance safety, ease the impact
of trade traffic on the
communities in the northeast sector of
Greater
Vancouver and support environmentally friendly
transportation planning.
"Not only will this
investment be good for commerce, but it will also ease congestion on
the Lougheed Highway and improve commuter time for Tri-City
residents," says Moore.
Another project
receiving an immediate cash injection that will benefit the
Tri-Cities is the $4 million announced for dredging on the Fraser
River. "For years British Columbians along the Fraser River
have been asking for dredging and protection from possible flooding.
For years we were ignored by Liberal governments," says Moore.
"Our Conservative government has delivered $4 million to dredge the
Fraser River for commercial purposes and flood protection."
Concluded Moore, "during
the election campaign we promised to 'Stand Up' for British
Columbia. From solving the softwood lumber dispute, to getting tough
on crime, and now with a massive investment into our infrastructure,
we are ensuring that British Columbia's interests are finally being
addressed."
