Keep Bertrand in Jail: Moore
COQUITLAM
- Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam MP James Moore is speaking out
on behalf of his constituents and calling for convicted murderer
Darcy Bertrand's coming parole request to be denied. "Darcy
Bertrand murdered his wife and her parents as they left church in
1996 in a vicious knife attack. He is a violent murderer who
should stay be behind bars," says Moore.
Bertrand's hearing will be on Wednesday, August 30th at 9:30am at
the Kwikwexwelhp Institution in Harrison Mills B.C.
"I
have met with family members of his victims, and they are in
disbelief that this violent criminal may be allowed day parole just
10 years after murdering three people," says Moore. "Serving
about 3 years in jail for each life he has taken would be a gross
injustice, and should not happen."
This
is not the first time Moore has spoken out with regard to Darcy
Bertrand. Back in October 2003 Moore protested Bertrand being
transferred to a
minimum security prison 20 minutes away from surviving family
members after only serving 7 years in jail. Astonishingly, the
transfer happened without so much as a word of warning to the
family.
"I have a
responsibility to speak out on behalf of my constituents," says
Moore. "Allowing Darcy Bertrand any form of parole after he
murdered 3 people in cold blood would be unjust and not in the best
interests of my community."
Concluded Moore, "My
message to the Parole Board, on behalf of my constituents, is
simple: keep Darcy Bertrand where he belongs - behind bars."
